A detailed Dutch etching from the 'Menselyk Bedryf' series, depicting a brass founder at work in his workshop, accompanied by moralising verse.
This etching by Cornelis van der Sys depicts a brass founder, or 'geelgieter', at work within his workshop. The scene is part of a series titled 'Menselyk Bedryf', which translates to 'Human Occupation'. The composition captures the interior of a Dutch workshop, where the artisan stands at a workbench, focused on his craft. A second figure is visible in the background, seated at a separate station. The room is filled with the tools and products of the trade, including various metal castings, moulds, and finished brass objects such as candlesticks and bells.
The print is accompanied by Dutch text, which serves as a moralising commentary on the nature of appearance versus reality. The verse suggests that while brass may shine like gold, it cannot withstand the test of fire, serving as a metaphor for worldly goods that lack true value. The artist employs precise, linear hatching to define the textures of the metal objects and the wooden furniture, creating a sense of depth within the confined space of the workshop. The lighting, filtered through a window, illuminates the central figure and the objects on the workbench, drawing the viewer's eye to the details of the casting process.
Van der Sys was a Dutch engraver and draughtsman active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. His work often documented the trades and daily life of the period, providing a visual record of contemporary craftsmanship. This print is a fine example of the genre, combining technical skill with the didactic themes common in Dutch art of the era. The inclusion of the text below the image frames the visual content within a broader philosophical context, typical of the moralising prints produced in the Netherlands at the time.
