A detailed seventeenth-century Dutch etching depicting a clockmaker at work, accompanied by moralising verses on the passage of time.
This etching by Cornelis van der Sys, titled De Horologiemaaker, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations). The work depicts a seventeenth-century Dutch workshop where a clockmaker sits at a workbench, focused on the delicate mechanisms of a timepiece. Beside him, an assistant or apprentice observes the process. The room is filled with the tools of the trade, including various clocks mounted on the walls and shelves, which provide a sense of the professional environment of the period.
Van der Sys employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of Dutch printmaking from this era. The composition uses a clear perspective, drawing the eye from the foreground workbench toward the open window, which reveals a glimpse of a canal-side town. The inclusion of text above and below the image serves a didactic purpose, common in moralising prints of the time. The verses reflect on the passage of time, using the clockmaker as a metaphor for the brevity of human life. The text warns the viewer to prepare their soul while the clock of life is still running, as once the weight has run down, no amount of wealth or status can rewind it.
This print offers a window into the daily life and philosophical preoccupations of the Dutch Republic. It captures the intersection of technical craft and moral instruction, a recurring theme in the art of the period. The fine lines and cross-hatching demonstrate the technical skill required to render the textures of wood, metal, and fabric within a small format. This piece is a representative example of how print culture disseminated both professional knowledge and ethical guidance to a broad audience in the early eighteenth century.
