A delicate graphite and watercolour study of the historic Kennemerpoort in Haarlem by Dutch artist Johannes Josephus Destree.
This work by Johannes Josephus Destree captures the Kennemerpoort, also known as the Nieuwpoort, in Haarlem. Destree, a Dutch artist active during the nineteenth century, frequently documented the architectural heritage of the Netherlands through precise, observational studies. His approach combines the technical rigour of a draughtsman with the atmospheric sensitivity of a watercolourist.
The composition focuses on the stone gateway, rendered with delicate graphite lines that define the masonry and the arched entrance. Destree employs a restrained palette, using washes of muted grey, brown, and green to suggest the surrounding foliage and the texture of the stone. The inclusion of a street lamp in the foreground provides a sense of scale and period detail, grounding the structure within its urban environment. The drawing retains a sense of immediacy, characteristic of works produced on-site or as preparatory studies for larger paintings.
Destree often explored the interplay between man-made structures and the natural world. Here, the trees flanking the gate soften the rigid lines of the architecture, creating a balanced visual harmony. The paper remains largely unworked in areas, allowing the viewer to observe the artist's process and the economy of his mark-making. This print offers a view into the historical topography of Haarlem, preserving the appearance of a structure that has since undergone significant changes. It is an example of the nineteenth-century interest in recording local history and the specific character of Dutch towns before the rapid industrialisation of the era.
