A detailed seventeenth-century mezzotint by Cornelis Dusart, capturing a lively domestic scene of children at play in a Dutch interior.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, produced this mezzotint during the latter part of the seventeenth century. The work depicts a domestic interior scene, a common subject within the Dutch Golden Age tradition. Dusart focuses on the activities of children at play, capturing a moment of informal, everyday life. An older girl stands in the centre, holding a toy, while a younger child sits in a high chair nearby. To the left, a boy interacts with a small dog, adding a sense of movement and spontaneity to the composition. The room contains various household objects, including a hoop, a pitcher, and a basket, which provide context to the setting.
The use of mezzotint allows for a wide range of tonal values, from deep shadows to bright highlights. This technique creates a soft, atmospheric quality that defines the interior space. Dusart employs light to draw the viewer's eye across the scene, moving from the window on the left to the figures gathered in the middle. The textures of the clothing, the wooden furniture, and the animals are rendered with precision, reflecting the artist's technical skill in printmaking. Unlike the more formal portraiture of the era, this print offers a glimpse into the private sphere of Dutch life. It avoids idealisation, presenting the children and their environment with a direct, observational quality. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged to suggest a narrative of play and interaction. This print remains a representative example of the genre scenes that were popular among collectors in the Netherlands during this period, demonstrating the capacity of print media to convey the nuances of light and shadow within a domestic setting.
