A detailed lithograph by Jan Veth depicting the historic chained library of the Walburgiskerk in Zutphen, published in 1897.
This lithograph by the Dutch artist Jan Veth depicts the interior of the Librije, the historic chained library located within the Walburgiskerk in Zutphen. Originally published as a supplement to the Dutch weekly magazine De Kroniek on 26 September 1897, the work captures the quiet, scholarly atmosphere of one of the few remaining libraries in Europe where books are still secured to their shelves by chains.
Veth, primarily known for his portraiture, demonstrates a keen eye for architectural form and light in this composition. The image focuses on the rhythmic repetition of the vaulted stone arches, which draw the eye upward and create a sense of verticality. Below these structural elements, the heavy wooden reading desks and the open, chained volumes occupy the foreground, grounding the scene in a tangible, historical reality. The artist employs a delicate range of grey tones to suggest the soft, diffused light filtering through the windows, which illuminates the pages of the books and the texture of the stone.
The composition balances the weight of the ecclesiastical architecture with the intimate scale of the library furniture. By choosing a low perspective, Veth invites the viewer into the space, allowing for a close examination of the reading desks and the specific arrangement of the chained books. The lithographic technique allows for subtle transitions in shadow, effectively conveying the stillness and age of the environment. This print serves as a record of a specific cultural site, rendered with the precision and atmospheric sensitivity characteristic of Veth's graphic work during the late nineteenth century.
