A sixteenth-century Dutch woodcut depicting the allegorical figure of War, armed with a sword and a flaming torch.
This woodcut by Jan Ewoutsz. depicts the personification of War, labelled as Oerloghe. The figure is rendered in a style characteristic of sixteenth-century Dutch printmaking, where allegorical subjects were frequently used to convey moral or political messages. The warrior stands in a contrapposto pose, holding a sword in the right hand and a flaming torch in the left, symbols traditionally associated with conflict and destruction.
The figure wears a helmet and a tunic adorned with an eagle motif, suggesting imperial or martial authority. The legs are protected by greaves featuring decorative scrollwork, which contrasts with the stark, functional appearance of the sword. The artist employs a clear, linear approach to the woodcut medium, using hatching to define the contours of the armour and the folds of the clothing. The background is minimal, focusing the viewer's attention entirely on the figure.
Jan Ewoutsz. was active in the Netherlands during a period of significant social and religious upheaval. Prints of this nature were often produced as part of series, representing virtues, vices, or the four temperaments. The inclusion of the artist's monogram on the rock at the base of the figure provides a clear attribution. This work is an example of the graphic arts of the period, where the woodcut served as a primary medium for disseminating allegorical imagery to a wider audience. The composition is balanced and direct, reflecting the formal conventions of the Northern Renaissance. The print remains a record of the visual language used to interpret abstract concepts like war through human form during the mid-to-late sixteenth century.
