A detailed mezzotint by Cornelis Dusart depicting elderly figures in a domestic setting, reflecting themes of mortality and daily life in the Dutch Golden Age.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, produced this mezzotint as part of a series depicting the stages of human life. The work captures a domestic interior, a common setting for Dutch genre scenes of the seventeenth century. Dusart employs the mezzotint technique to achieve a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows of the hearth to the soft light illuminating the figures.
The composition features three elderly individuals gathered near a fireplace. One figure sits in a chair, appearing to doze or succumb to the effects of drink, while another is served a meal by a woman leaning on a staff. The scene conveys the physical decline associated with ageing. A small print of a skeleton hangs on the wall behind them, a memento mori that serves as a reminder of mortality. The presence of a jug, a glass, and a bowl of food suggests a modest, everyday existence.
Dusart was known for his focus on the lower classes, often portraying them with a degree of caricature. His work provides a window into the social observations of the period. The texture of the clothing, the rough surfaces of the furniture, and the flickering light of the fire are rendered with technical precision. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to manipulate light and shadow to create a sense of atmosphere within a confined space. It is a representative example of the late Dutch Golden Age interest in moralising genre subjects.
