A nineteenth-century Dutch genre painting depicting a market scene with a poultry dealer and customers, rendered in a realistic style.
Willem Jodocus Mattheus Engelberts, a Dutch painter active during the nineteenth century, frequently turned his attention to the daily lives of common people. In this work, titled De poelierster, he captures a scene at a market stall. The composition focuses on a transaction between a young woman and a poultry dealer, who is seated and preparing a bird. An older woman stands between them, gesturing as if to facilitate the exchange or offer advice. The setting is a modest, covered market area, with game hanging from the rafters and baskets of produce nearby.
Engelberts employs a traditional approach to genre painting, prioritising clear narrative and careful observation of costume and texture. The clothing of the figures reflects the regional dress of the period, rendered with attention to the folds of fabric and the specific materials of the garments. The lighting is soft, directed to draw the eye toward the interaction at the centre of the frame, while the background remains in shadow, suggesting the depth of the market stall. The palette consists of earthy tones, including ochre, muted reds, and browns, which ground the scene in a realistic, everyday context. The artist avoids idealisation, choosing instead to document the mundane activities of trade and social interaction. This piece provides a glimpse into the social fabric of the era, where the market served as a primary site for community engagement and commerce. The attention to detail in the poultry and the tools of the trade adds a layer of authenticity to the narrative, reflecting the artist's interest in the material culture of his time.
