A seventeenth-century Dutch etching depicting a pump maker at work, taken from the series Menselyk Bedryf.
This etching, titled De Pompemaker, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), a collection documenting various trades and crafts in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century. The print depicts a workshop scene where a pump maker is engaged in the manual labour of boring out a wooden pump shaft. The composition is structured to show the physical exertion of the worker, who stands in the foreground, while the background provides a glimpse of a harbour with ships, contextualising the necessity of these maritime tools.
The artist, Cornelis van der Sys, employs a precise etching technique to define the textures of the wooden tools, the rough clothing of the figures, and the architectural elements of the workshop. The inclusion of text above and below the image serves a didactic purpose, common in the period, offering moral reflections on the nature of work and the human condition. The verse compares the mechanical function of a pump, which clears water from a leaking ship, to the spiritual duty of a person to purge themselves of sin while navigating the world.
As a historical document, this work offers a view into the specialised labour that supported the Dutch maritime economy. The focus on the physical process of the craft, rather than an idealised representation, aligns with the broader interest in everyday life found in Dutch art of the era. The print is a clear example of how technical manuals and moralising literature intersected with visual art to educate the public on the value of industry and the interconnectedness of trade and morality. The clean lines and balanced composition ensure the subject remains the primary focus, providing a clear view of the tools and methods employed by seventeenth-century craftsmen.
