A precise topographical drawing by Jacobus Stellingwerff, capturing the fortified Lek Gate at Vianen with delicate ink lines and grey wash.
This drawing by Jacobus Stellingwerff depicts the Lek Gate at Vianen, a fortified entrance to the town situated along the Lek river. Stellingwerff was a prolific Dutch draughtsman known for his extensive documentation of buildings, castles, and town gates across the Netherlands. His work often functioned as a visual record of structures that were either disappearing or had historical significance to the local topography.
The composition is restrained, focusing on the architectural form of the gatehouse with its two prominent towers and conical roofs. The artist employs a clear, linear approach, using ink to define the structural edges of the masonry and the bridge spanning the water. A light grey wash provides subtle shading, suggesting the volume of the towers and the atmospheric quality of the sky. The inclusion of the date 1607 in the lower margin indicates the historical period the drawing aims to represent, rather than the date of the drawing itself, which likely dates to the early eighteenth century.
Stellingwerff often produced these works as part of larger collections documenting Dutch heritage. The drawing is characterised by its clean, objective style, typical of topographical studies from this period. The absence of excessive detail allows the viewer to focus on the silhouette of the gate against the open expanse of the sky. The small bridge in the foreground provides a sense of scale, connecting the viewer to the fortified entrance. This piece offers a glimpse into the historical architecture of Vianen, preserved through the careful hand of an artist dedicated to the preservation of Dutch regional history.
