This work depicts the pulpit of a church in Hoorn, rendered with the characteristic economy of brushwork that defined his later career. Bosboom focused on the interplay of light and shadow within these cavernous spaces, often prioritising the atmosphere of the architecture over precise topographical detail.

The composition centres on the heavy, wooden structure of the pulpit, which is suspended against the pale, austere walls of the church. Bosboom used a muted palette of ochres, greys, and browns to capture the texture of aged wood and stone.
