A detailed 1694 etching by Cornelis van der Sys depicting a seventeenth-century gunsmith at work, from the Menselyk Bedryf series.
This etching, titled De Roeremaaker, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), published in Amsterdam in 1694. Cornelis van der Sys provides a detailed view into the workshop of a seventeenth-century gunsmith. The central figure is shown hunched over a firearm, meticulously adjusting the mechanism while resting his foot on a stool. To the left, another worker carries a wooden stock, while a third figure works in the background. The scene is framed by stone arches, suggesting an open-air or semi-enclosed workshop environment typical of the period.
The composition employs fine, hatched lines to define the textures of the wooden stocks, the metal barrels, and the rough masonry of the workshop walls. The inclusion of text above and below the image provides moralising commentary, a common feature in Dutch prints of this era. The verses reflect on the nature of weaponry and the spiritual struggle, contrasting physical arms with the metaphorical weapons of prayer and piety.
Van der Sys captures the technical reality of the trade with precision. The tools, the posture of the craftsmen, and the arrangement of the muskets leaning against the wall offer a glimpse into the daily labour of the Dutch Republic. The print is a fine example of the genre tradition, where the depiction of common trades served both as a record of contemporary life and a vehicle for didactic instruction. The work is printed on paper, maintaining the crispness of the original copperplate lines. It is an excellent piece for those interested in the history of technology, seventeenth-century Dutch social life, or the development of printmaking techniques.
