A detailed maritime etching by Reinier Nooms depicting the Dutch warship De Vrijheid and the Spanish vessel De Hazewind.
Reinier Nooms, often known by his nickname Zeeman (the seaman), possessed an intimate knowledge of naval architecture and maritime life. This etching depicts two distinct vessels: the Dutch warship De Vrijheid and the Spanish merchant ship De Hazewind. Nooms spent his early life at sea, which informs the technical precision found in his rendering of rigging, hull construction, and the behaviour of sails under wind pressure.
The composition is balanced, placing the two ships in a parallel arrangement that allows the viewer to compare their structural differences. The Dutch vessel on the left is shown in a moment of activity, with smoke billowing from its cannons, suggesting a naval engagement. The Spanish ship on the right is depicted with a focus on its profile and deck details. Nooms employs a disciplined etching technique, using fine, controlled lines to define the texture of the water and the complex web of ropes and masts. The sky remains relatively clear, directing the viewer's attention to the ships themselves rather than atmospheric effects.
This work belongs to a period when the Dutch Republic dominated maritime trade and naval warfare. Prints of this nature were popular among collectors who valued both the artistic skill of the etcher and the documentary accuracy of the subject matter. Nooms avoids unnecessary ornamentation, preferring a direct, observational approach that captures the reality of seventeenth-century seafaring. The inclusion of the names of the ships at the base of the print confirms its function as a record of specific vessels. The work remains a primary source for historians interested in the naval technology of the Dutch Golden Age, providing a clear view of how these ships were rigged and armed during the mid-seventeenth century.
