A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting a Dutch mirror maker at work, from the series Menselyk Bedryf.
This etching, titled De Spiegelmaker, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), a collection documenting various trades and crafts in the late seventeenth-century Netherlands. The work depicts a mirror maker within his workshop, holding a finished, ornate mirror frame. The composition provides a glimpse into the daily life of a craftsman, with the interior space balanced by a view through an open window onto a canal scene. The artist employs precise, fine lines to define the texture of the mirror frame, the clothing of the figures, and the architectural details of the workshop.
Cornelis van der Sys captures the quiet concentration of the trade. The mirror maker stands in the foreground, while a second figure works at a bench in the background. The inclusion of the canal scene outside adds depth to the composition, grounding the workshop in a specific urban environment. The text accompanying the image, typical of the period, provides a moralising or philosophical commentary on the nature of reflection and reality, a common theme in Dutch art of this era. The etching demonstrates the technical skill required for small-scale printmaking, where every mark contributes to the overall clarity of the scene. The work serves as a historical record of Dutch craftsmanship, documenting the tools and settings of a specialised trade. The print is characterised by its clean lines and balanced composition, typical of the illustrative style used in Dutch publications of the late seventeenth century. It offers a view into the past, documenting the intersection of commerce, art, and daily labour.
