An eighteenth-century Dutch etching depicting a stonecutter at work, from the series Menselyk Bedryf.
This etching, titled De Steenhouwer, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), a collection documenting various trades and crafts in the early eighteenth-century Netherlands. Cornelis van der Sys provides a detailed view of a stonecutter at work, capturing the physical labour required to shape building materials. The composition centres on the artisan, who is shown mid-motion with a mallet, focused on a large block of stone.
The scene includes architectural elements in the background, suggesting an urban workshop environment. The artist employs a precise etching technique to define the textures of the stone, the worker's clothing, and the surrounding tools. Above the image, the text identifies the subject, while the verses below offer a moralising interpretation of the trade, comparing the physical construction of a house to the spiritual building of the church. This blend of secular labour and religious allegory is characteristic of the period's didactic literature.
As a historical document, the print offers insight into the tools and methods of the era. The inclusion of the original Dutch text adds a layer of cultural context, reflecting the values and social structure of the time. The print is presented here with its original margins and typography, preserving the aesthetic of an eighteenth-century book illustration. It serves as a study of both the history of labour and the graphic traditions of the Dutch Republic.
