A detailed topographical drawing by Bernardino Minozzi, depicting the villa of Cavaliere Galbarri in Rimaggio using pen and brown ink.
This drawing by the Italian artist Bernardino Minozzi depicts the villa of Cavaliere Galbarri, situated in Rimaggio. Minozzi, active during the mid-eighteenth century, produced numerous topographical studies that document the architectural character of the Italian countryside. His approach combines precise pen work with fluid washes to define the structural elements of the villa and the surrounding terrain.
The composition centres on the villa, a multi-storey structure featuring a central tower and a symmetrical facade. Minozzi employs brown ink to delineate the architectural details, including the windows and the entrance. The application of brown wash provides volume to the building and suggests the play of light across the stone surfaces. The foreground and the path leading towards the villa are rendered with lighter, more gestural strokes, which guide the eye through the scene. The surrounding trees and smaller outbuildings are sketched with a degree of informality, providing a sense of the villa's integration into its rural environment.
Such drawings were often produced as records of travel or as preparatory studies for larger compositions. The work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in documenting specific locations, a practice common among artists and collectors of the period. The presence of a collector's mark in the lower right corner suggests that this drawing was held in a private collection before entering a public institution. The paper shows signs of age, which contributes to the aesthetic quality of the piece, while the ink remains legible. This print captures the observational skill of Minozzi, offering a view into the domestic architecture of the Italian region near Florence during the mid-eighteenth century.
