A gouache by Jean-Baptiste Oudry depicts a hunting scene with a wolf, a hunter, and dead animals, rendered in a monochromatic palette of greys and blues.
Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) was a French Rococo painter, engraver, and designer. He is particularly well known for his naturalistic animal paintings and hunting scenes, often commissioned by the French aristocracy. Oudry served as the director of the Beauvais tapestry factory and later as an inspector at the Gobelins tapestry factory. His work bridged the gap between the earlier Baroque style and the emerging Rococo. This gouache depicts a hunting scene with a wolf, a hunter, and several dead animals. The composition is dominated by the wolf, pierced by an arrow, howling in pain or defiance. A dead boar lies nearby, along with other game. In the background, a hunter stands near a tree, seemingly observing the scene. The monochromatic palette, primarily in shades of grey and blue, gives the work a somewhat sombre mood. The detailed rendering of the animals and the surrounding foliage demonstrates Oudry's skill in capturing naturalistic details. The image is framed by a painted blue border, adding to its decorative quality.
