A watercolour painting by Franz Marc, 'Dead Deer' captures the animal in a state of repose, rendered in shades of red and orange, contrasting with the cool blues and greens of the background.
Franz Marc (1880-1916) was a German Expressionist painter, best known for his works depicting animals, often in bold, symbolic colours. He sought to reveal the inner essence and spiritual connection between animals and the natural world. Marc was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), an influential group of Expressionist artists. His career was cut short by his death in World War I. 'Dead Deer' is a watercolour painting that captures the animal in a state of repose. The deer is rendered in shades of red and orange, contrasting with the cool blues and greens of the background. The composition is simple, with the deer's form filling much of the frame. The watercolour medium lends itself to the fluid, almost dreamlike quality of the image. The painting reflects Marc's interest in conveying the emotional and spiritual dimensions of the animal world, rather than a literal representation.
