An early, expressive oil painting by Jack Bush, capturing the stark, textured forms of a forest in muted, earthy tones.
Dead Trees is an early work by the Canadian painter Jack Bush. Before he became known for his later colour-field abstractions, Bush engaged with the rugged traditions of the Group of Seven and the influence of the Canadian wilderness. This piece captures a sombre, wooded scene through a lens of heavy impasto and deliberate brushwork.
The composition focuses on the skeletal forms of dead trees, which rise against a muted, atmospheric background. Bush uses a palette dominated by deep forest greens, charcoal greys, and earthy browns, punctuated by subtle hints of ochre. The application of paint is tactile: the artist builds texture through visible, rhythmic strokes that define the rough bark and the tangled undergrowth. Unlike his later, flatter works, this painting retains a sense of physical depth and a direct, observational approach to the natural world.
This work reflects a period in Bush's career when he was actively reconciling his interest in European modernism with the specific demands of the Canadian environment. The trees are not merely subjects but vehicles for exploring light and shadow. The contrast between the dark, vertical trunks and the lighter, hazy sky creates a sense of stillness. By focusing on the decay of the forest, Bush avoids the romanticised depictions of nature common in his era, opting instead for a more grounded, material reality. The work provides a clear view into the formative years of an artist who would eventually strip away such representational elements in favour of pure colour and form.
