A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Aegidius Sadeler II, featuring a central dedication tablet framed by obelisks and allegorical figures.
This print by Aegidius Sadeler II serves as a dedication plate, likely from a larger series documenting Roman antiquities. The composition features a central stone tablet inscribed with Italian text, flanked by two obelisks adorned with pseudo-Egyptian hieroglyphs. Above the tablet, two putti support a heraldic crest, surrounded by various scientific and artistic instruments, including a compass, a globe, and a balance scale. These elements suggest the intellectual pursuits of the patron, Matteo Wackher von Wackhenfels, to whom the work is addressed.
Sadeler, a member of a prominent family of engravers, was active in Prague at the court of Rudolf II. His technical proficiency in etching and engraving allowed for the precise rendering of the stone textures and the delicate shading of the putti. The inclusion of obelisks reflects the European fascination with Egyptian motifs during the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, often interpreted through a lens of classical scholarship. The hieroglyphs are stylised representations rather than accurate transcriptions, functioning as decorative symbols of ancient wisdom and mystery.
The print demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Sadeler workshop. The balance between the rigid, vertical forms of the obelisks and the fluid, organic figures of the putti creates a structured visual hierarchy. This work provides insight into the conventions of seventeenth-century print culture, where dedication pages were used to establish the scholarly credentials of both the artist and the patron. The clean lines and clear spatial arrangement are characteristic of the period's approach to architectural and antiquarian documentation, prioritising legibility and symbolic clarity over atmospheric effects.
