A seventeenth-century etching by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi featuring a formal dedication to Agostino Chigi, complete with heraldic imagery and a view of Rome.
This seventeenth-century print by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi functions as a formal dedication, featuring a central plinth inscribed with a tribute to Agostino Chigi, Prince of Farnese. The composition is characteristic of the Roman Baroque period, blending heraldic display with allegorical figures. At the top, the Chigi family coat of arms is supported by two mermaids, their tails curling into the decorative frame. Below, the plinth is flanked by river gods and nymphs, who pour water from urns, referencing the Roman aqueducts and fountains that define the city's character.
The background offers a glimpse of Rome, showing architectural elements that evoke the grandeur of the city under papal patronage. The etching technique allows for a high degree of precision in the rendering of the stone textures, the flowing drapery of the figures, and the distant cityscape. De' Rossi, a prominent publisher and printmaker in Rome, produced works that documented the city's urban transformation. This piece serves as a visual record of the intersection between aristocratic patronage and the dissemination of architectural imagery during the late seventeenth century.
The print demonstrates the technical skill required for complex allegorical compositions. The balance between the central text block and the surrounding figures creates a structured, symmetrical arrangement. The inclusion of the Chigi arms and the specific mention of Pope Alexander VII in the text provide a clear historical context, linking the print to the political and social hierarchies of the time. The work is a fine example of the printmaking traditions that flourished in Rome, where artists and publishers collaborated to document the city's aesthetic and historical identity for a wider audience of collectors and scholars.
