A detailed eighteenth-century etching by Jean Moyreau, reproducing an original composition by Antoine Watteau depicting soldiers preparing to march.
This etching, titled Défilé, is a reproduction of an original painting by Antoine Watteau. Jean Moyreau, a skilled French engraver, executed this work to capture the atmospheric qualities of Watteau's composition. The scene depicts a group of soldiers on horseback and on foot, preparing to depart. The figures are positioned on a slight rise, looking out toward a distant town under a dramatic, cloud-filled sky.
Typical of the Rococo period, the work balances military subject matter with a sense of theatricality. The foliage framing the scene provides a natural stage for the figures, while the light effects suggest the transition of the day. Moyreau employs a variety of hatching techniques to differentiate between the textures of the soldiers' uniforms, the horses' coats, and the surrounding vegetation. The engraving process allows for a high degree of precision, particularly in the rendering of the distant horizon and the soft, diffused light filtering through the clouds.
This print was produced as part of the Recueil Jullienne, a comprehensive catalogue of Watteau's work commissioned by his friend and patron, Jean de Jullienne. The inclusion of bilingual text in French and Latin at the base of the print reflects the scholarly and international ambitions of such eighteenth-century collections. The composition demonstrates the characteristic grace and fluidity associated with Watteau's style, even when translated into the medium of print. The figures are arranged in a manner that suggests movement and anticipation, capturing a quiet moment before the march begins. This piece offers an insight into the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers during the French Enlightenment, where the dissemination of art through prints became a primary method for documenting the output of major masters.
