A detailed ink and wash drawing from 1702 depicting an elegant social gathering at a tea table in a Dutch salon.
This work by Philip Tidemann, dated 1702, captures a scene of social refinement within a Dutch interior. The composition centres on a group of figures gathered around a tea table, a practice that gained popularity among the elite during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The artist employs ink and wash to define the architectural details of the salon, including the classical columns and the ornate fireplace, which provide a sense of scale and formality to the setting.
The figures are dressed in the elaborate fashions of the period, featuring high-piled hairstyles and structured garments. Their postures and interactions suggest a controlled, polite social exchange. To the left, a servant attends to the arrangement, while a dog occupies the foreground, adding a touch of domestic realism to the otherwise formal environment. Another figure descends a staircase on the right, further integrating the architectural space with the human activity.
Tidemann, a Dutch painter active during the late Baroque era, demonstrates a precise approach to line and shading. The use of wash creates a monochromatic depth, allowing the viewer to focus on the textures of the clothing and the reflective surfaces of the tea service. The work functions as a record of contemporary social customs, reflecting the material culture and domestic habits of the Dutch upper classes at the turn of the century. The inclusion of the date on the lower step confirms its creation during the final years of the artist's career.
