A moody, figurative interior scene by American painter Robert Spencer, featuring two figures in a dimly lit, sparse setting.
Robert Spencer, an American painter associated with the New Hope School, is typically recognised for his atmospheric depictions of Pennsylvania mills and canal scenes. This work, titled Dejeuner, represents a departure from his usual subject matter. It presents a more intimate, perhaps even melancholic, interior scene. The composition features two figures seated on the floor, accompanied by a bottle and simple provisions. The lighting is low and moody, casting distinct shadows against the wall, which is punctuated by two circular iron fixtures.
The brushwork is loose and expressive, favouring mood and form over precise detail. The woman, dressed in a striking blue garment, sits with a relaxed posture, while the man beside her appears more withdrawn, his head bowed. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, ochres, and browns, which serve to ground the figures within the space. The blue of the woman's dress provides a singular point of contrast, drawing the eye toward the centre of the composition.
Spencer's approach here suggests an interest in the psychological state of his subjects rather than a purely observational recording of a scene. The starkness of the background and the simplicity of the setting create a sense of isolation. This piece offers a glimpse into the broader range of Spencer's practice, moving away from the soft, light-filled landscapes that defined his career. It remains a curious example of his ability to capture human presence through a sombre, muted lens, demonstrating his technical skill in handling paint to convey atmosphere and character.
