Delta Kappa - Morris Louis

Delta Kappa is a representative work from the series of paintings Morris Louis produced between 1960 and 1961, often categorised as his Unfurled series. The composition is defined by a large, unpainted central area of raw canvas, flanked by two distinct streams of colour that flow from the upper edges toward the bottom centre of the frame. These streams consist of multiple, overlapping bands of pigment that appear to cascade down the surface.

Louis achieved this effect by pouring thinned Magna paint onto unprimed canvas. By manipulating the angle of the support, he allowed the liquid colour to run in controlled, gravity-driven paths. This technique removes the presence of the artist's brushstroke, resulting in a surface where the paint is absorbed directly into the fibres of the fabric. The interaction between the fluid pigment and the absorbent canvas creates a soft, stained appearance rather than a layered, impasto texture.

The palette in Delta Kappa includes sharp reds, deep blacks, yellows, greens, and oranges. These colours do not mix on the surface but remain distinct, creating a sense of movement and directionality. The vast, empty space in the middle acts as a vacuum, pulling the viewer's attention toward the edges where the colour activity occurs. This spatial arrangement is a hallmark of Louis's approach to the canvas, where the relationship between the painted and unpainted areas dictates the visual experience.

As a practitioner of the Washington Color School, Louis sought to liberate colour from the constraints of figurative representation. By focusing on the physical properties of the paint and the raw canvas, he created works that exist as objects in their own right.
