A delicate portrait of Denise Maréchal by Belgian Neo-Impressionist Théo van Rysselberghe, executed in 1889 using the pointillist technique.
This portrait of Denise Maréchal, painted in 1889, demonstrates the application of Neo-Impressionist techniques by the Belgian artist Théo van Rysselberghe. The work utilises the method of pointillism, where small, distinct dots of colour are applied in patterns to form an image. By placing these pigments side by side, the artist relies on the viewer's eye to blend the colours optically, creating a luminosity that differs from traditional brushwork.
The composition features the young girl standing against a wall, her figure rendered with a soft, diffused quality characteristic of the divisionist style. The palette is dominated by warm, golden ochres and earthy tones, which contrast with the cool white of her dress and the dark accents of her sash and stockings. The background is simplified, allowing the focus to remain on the subject's quiet presence. A framed picture hangs on the wall behind her, providing a sense of domestic space while maintaining the flat, decorative surface quality favoured by the Neo-Impressionists.
Van Rysselberghe was a founding member of Les XX, a group of artists in Brussels who promoted avant-garde art. His adoption of the pointillist method followed his encounter with the work of Georges Seurat. This portrait reflects his interest in the scientific approach to colour theory, where the objective is to achieve maximum chromatic intensity through the juxtaposition of complementary colours. The result is a calm, measured depiction that captures the stillness of the subject through a rigorous, systematic application of paint.
