A detailed Victorian colour print by George Baxter, depicting the biblical Descent from the Cross through his innovative multi-block printing process.
This work is a fine example of the Baxter process, a method of colour printing developed by the British artist and inventor George Baxter. By using a combination of a steel plate for the key lines and multiple wood blocks for individual colours, Baxter achieved a level of tonal depth and chromatic range that was previously difficult to produce in mass-market prints. This specific image depicts the biblical scene of the Descent from the Cross, a subject frequently explored in European art history, most notably by Peter Paul Rubens.
Baxter’s interpretation focuses on the physical labour of the figures lowering the body of Christ. The composition is structured around the central vertical axis of the cross, with figures arranged in a pyramid to guide the eye toward the central subject. The use of light and shadow is managed through the layering of ink, creating a sense of volume in the drapery and the musculature of the figures. The palette relies on deep blues, warm reds, and the stark white of the shroud to create a clear visual hierarchy.
As a commercial printer, Baxter aimed to bring high-quality reproductions of fine art to a wider audience during the mid-nineteenth century. His prints were often sold as standalone decorative items or used as illustrations for books and periodicals. The precision of the registration between the various blocks is evident in the clarity of the outlines and the subtle blending of hues. This print retains the original embossed seal, which was a hallmark of Baxter’s production, ensuring the authenticity and quality of the impression. The work provides a clear view into the technical advancements of Victorian printmaking and the period's interest in accessible religious iconography.
