A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Cornelis Bloemaert (II) depicting the mythological scene of Deucalion and Pyrrha repopulating the earth.
This etching by Cornelis Bloemaert (II) depicts the classical myth of Deucalion and Pyrrha, the sole survivors of the great flood in Ovid's Metamorphoses. The composition is contained within a precise oval frame, a common format for seventeenth-century book illustrations and prints. In the foreground, the couple stands on a rocky shore, casting stones behind them over their shoulders. According to the myth, these stones transform into humans, populating the earth anew. Several small figures are shown emerging from the ground or rising from the rocks, representing this miraculous creation.
In the background, a circular temple stands upon a hill, providing a sense of architectural order against the open sky. Bloemaert employs fine, controlled lines to define the drapery of the figures and the texture of the landscape. The shading is achieved through cross-hatching, which creates volume and depth within the figures. The artist, a member of the prominent Bloemaert family of Utrecht, spent much of his career in Rome, where he refined his technical skill in engraving. His work often reflects the influence of Italian masters, particularly in the treatment of the human form and the clarity of the narrative.
This print demonstrates the precision characteristic of Dutch printmaking during the seventeenth century. The balanced arrangement of the figures and the clear depiction of the mythological event make it a representative example of the period's interest in classical themes. The work is executed with a focus on anatomical accuracy and narrative legibility, typical of the era's approach to historical subjects. The clean lines and the deliberate use of light and shadow ensure that the focus remains on the transformative action of the central figures.
