A seventeenth-century etching depicting diamond cutters at work, taken from the series Menselyk Bedryf.
This etching, titled Diamantslijper, originates from the publication Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), a series documenting various trades and crafts in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century. The work depicts the specialised labour of diamond cutting, a profession that held significant economic weight in Amsterdam at the time.
The composition focuses on two figures engaged in the precise task of grinding stones. The foreground figure stands at a workbench, hunched over the equipment, while a second individual works at a circular grinding wheel in the middle distance. The artist employs fine, cross-hatched lines to define the wooden structures of the machinery and the shadows within the workshop. The architectural setting includes large, multi-paned windows, which provide the necessary natural light for such exacting work.
Accompanying the image is a Dutch verse, which reflects the moralising tone common in seventeenth-century didactic literature. The text contrasts the vanity of wearing precious stones with the spiritual value of inner beauty. By documenting the physical reality of the workshop alongside these philosophical observations, the print offers a view into the intersection of commerce, industry, and social commentary in the Dutch Republic. The technical execution demonstrates the precision required of printmakers during this period, using varied line weights to create a sense of depth and texture within the confined space of the workshop. This piece is a historical record of a specific trade, capturing the tools, posture, and environment of the diamond cutter with clarity and detail.
