A refined Baroque depiction of the goddess Diana preparing for the hunt, painted by Simon Vouet in the 1630s.
Simon Vouet, a central figure in the development of the French Baroque style, painted this work around 1637. The composition depicts the goddess Diana, identified by the crescent moon ornament in her hair, preparing for the chase. She is accompanied by two attendants who manage her hunting hounds. The figures are arranged in a pyramidal structure, a common device in classical painting, which directs the viewer's eye across the canvas.
Vouet employs a clear, luminous palette, moving away from the heavy shadows of his earlier Italian period. The drapery, rendered in shades of deep blue and golden yellow, demonstrates his skill in handling fabric and form. The soft, idealised features of the women reflect the influence of his time in Rome, where he absorbed the lessons of the Carracci and Guido Reni. The background, while secondary to the figures, provides a sense of atmospheric depth, suggesting the edge of a forest at dawn.
This painting is a fine example of the decorative and courtly art that flourished in Paris during the reign of Louis XIII. Vouet was instrumental in bringing a more refined, classical sensibility to French painting, which would later influence the academic style of the following decades. The hounds, depicted with naturalistic detail, add a sense of movement and anticipation to the scene.
