A detailed architectural rendering of a dining room interior by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, created for his 1901 Haus eines Kunstfreundes competition entry.
This watercolour and ink rendering by Charles Rennie Mackintosh depicts the dining room for his entry in the 1901 competition for the Haus eines Kunstfreundes (House for an Art Lover). The design reflects the distinct aesthetic of the Glasgow School, characterised by a synthesis of geometric rigour and organic, stylised motifs. Mackintosh presents a space where furniture, lighting, and architecture function as a unified whole. The elongated, high-backed chairs, a signature element of his furniture design, anchor the composition, while the linear wall panelling creates a sense of order and verticality.
The room features a vaulted ceiling, from which delicate, spherical light fixtures are suspended. These pendants provide a rhythmic counterpoint to the rigid, horizontal lines of the sideboard and dining table. The floor is marked by a subtle, dotted pattern that guides the eye through the space, suggesting a deliberate flow of movement. Mackintosh incorporates decorative panels above the panelling, which introduce soft, figurative elements into the otherwise structured environment. The colour palette remains muted, relying on soft greys, browns, and subtle accents to maintain a sense of calm and cohesion.
This work demonstrates the architect's approach to total design, where every detail, from the placement of the table to the specific form of the light fittings, is considered in relation to the entire room. The drawing serves as a record of his vision for a modern domestic interior, balancing functional requirements with a highly personal decorative language. It remains a primary example of early twentieth-century architectural illustration, documenting the transition toward modernism while retaining a connection to the decorative traditions of the period.
