A nineteenth-century chromolithograph by the Calcutta Art Studio depicting the goddesses Kali and Tara in their wrathful forms.
This chromolithograph, produced by the Calcutta Art Studio in the late nineteenth century, presents a dual depiction of the Hindu goddesses Kali and Tara. The Calcutta Art Studio was established in 1878 in Bowbazar, Kolkata, and became known for its mass-produced prints that brought mythological subjects into the homes of the growing middle class. These prints utilised European lithographic techniques to render traditional iconography, resulting in a distinct visual hybridity.
The left panel depicts Kali, the goddess of time and destruction. She is shown in her classic form, standing atop the supine body of Shiva. Her skin is dark, and she wears a garland of severed heads, holding a bloodied scimitar in one hand. The background suggests a desolate, cosmic space. The right panel features Tara, another form of the Mahavidya, standing upon a corpse amidst flames. She holds a lotus and a scimitar, adorned with a garland of skulls. Both figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical detail and dramatic lighting, reflecting the studio's adoption of Western academic realism to depict complex theological concepts.
The use of chromolithography allowed for the replication of subtle colour gradients and shading, which were previously difficult to achieve in traditional woodblock or hand-painted prints. The composition is balanced, with both goddesses occupying a similar vertical space, creating a sense of symmetry despite the chaotic nature of their respective scenes. This print serves as an example of the shift in Indian visual culture during the colonial period, where traditional religious imagery was adapted for new printing technologies. The work remains a significant document of the commercial art production that defined the aesthetic of late nineteenth-century Bengal, bridging the gap between sacred art and popular print culture.
