A classic Post-Impressionist still life by Paul Cézanne, featuring a bowl of apples and a porcelain vessel rendered with structural brushwork.
Paul Cézanne produced this still life during a period of intense focus on the structural properties of objects. The composition centres on a shallow dish piled with fruit, resting upon a white cloth that cascades across the table surface. To the right, a lidded porcelain vessel provides a secondary form, while the background features a decorative panel with floral motifs.
Cézanne rejects traditional linear perspective in favour of a constructed space. The table appears to tilt forward, bringing the fruit into closer proximity with the viewer. His application of paint is deliberate, using small, block-like brushstrokes to build volume and define the contours of the apples. These strokes create a sense of weight and physical presence, moving away from the ephemeral light effects favoured by his Impressionist contemporaries.
The colour palette relies on a balance of warm tones within the fruit, contrasted against the cool blues and greys of the background and the stark white of the cloth. The artist uses shadow not merely to indicate the absence of light, but as a structural element that helps define the spherical forms of the apples. By simplifying the objects into basic geometric shapes, Cézanne invites the viewer to observe the relationship between colour, light, and form. This approach to painting influenced subsequent generations of artists, particularly those associated with the development of Cubism. The work remains a primary example of his method of analysing the visual world through a rigorous, systematic process of observation and application.
