A detail from Filippo Lippi's 'Disputation in the Synagogue' fresco, painted in the mid-15th century, shows a group of figures in a shallow space, set against a backdrop of architectural elements and a rocky, atmospheric vista.
This is a detail from Filippo Lippi's fresco, 'Disputation in the Synagogue', painted in the mid-15th century. Lippi (1406-1469) was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. He spent much of his career in Florence. His work combined the new monumentality of Masaccio with delicate, decorative details. He was also the teacher of Botticelli. The fresco is part of a larger cycle in the apse of the Prato Cathedral. This detail shows a group of figures in a shallow space, set against a backdrop of architectural elements and a rocky, atmospheric vista. A central figure, wearing a bishop's mitre and elaborate robes, is flanked by onlookers. To the right, a kneeling figure in red receives a blessing. The colours are muted, with a focus on earth tones, whites, and pale blues. The figures are rendered with a careful attention to drapery and facial expression, characteristic of Lippi's style.
