A traditional Russian Orthodox icon depicting Sophia, the Holy Wisdom of God, featuring the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist.
This icon depicts the theological concept of Sophia, the Holy Wisdom of God, a subject common in Eastern Orthodox tradition. The central figure is an angel, representing Wisdom, seated upon a throne within a circular mandorla. The figure wears imperial vestments, signifying divine authority. To the left stands the Virgin Mary, holding a medallion, while John the Baptist stands to the right, holding a scroll. Above the central throne, a smaller representation of Christ appears within a circle, flanked by groups of angels. The composition follows the traditional iconographic canon, which prioritises symbolic clarity over naturalistic space. The work displays the characteristic features of Russian icon painting. The figures are elongated, and the perspective is flattened to focus the viewer on the spiritual nature of the subjects. The use of gold leaf, typical of the period, would have provided a reflective surface to catch candlelight in a church setting. The Cyrillic inscriptions at the top and sides identify the figures and the theme, serving as a guide for the faithful. The panel shows signs of age, including surface wear and paint loss, which are common in historical devotional objects that have seen centuries of use. This print captures the formal qualities of the original tempera painting. The lines are precise, defining the drapery of the garments and the facial features of the saints. The arrangement of the figures creates a balanced, symmetrical composition that draws the eye toward the central figure of Wisdom. This piece is an example of the liturgical art produced for private or communal worship, where the image functions as a window into the divine realm. It remains a study in the visual language of the Orthodox Church, where every gesture and colour choice carries specific theological meaning.
