This woodcut portrait by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner depicts a seated woman holding a Japanese umbrella. The work is characterised by simplified forms and a muted colour palette, typical of the artist's Expressionist style.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, was a founder of the artist group Die Brücke (The Bridge). His work often explored themes of urban life, alienation, and psychological tension, characterised by bold colours, distorted forms, and a raw, emotional intensity. Kirchner aimed to capture the sensory overload and fragmented experience of modern existence. His work was later condemned as degenerate art by the Nazi regime. He suffered from mental health issues and committed suicide in 1938. 'Dodo with a Japanese Umbrella' is a woodcut portrait depicting a seated woman holding an umbrella. The composition is relatively simple, with the figure dominating the space. The colour palette is restrained, featuring muted tones of yellow, red, and blue. The lines are somewhat crude, typical of woodcut prints, and the forms are simplified, contributing to the overall expressive quality of the work. The Japanese umbrella adds an exotic touch, reflecting the influence of non-Western art on Expressionist artists.
