Alexandra Exter, a Russian artist (1882-1949), created works that bridged Cubism and Futurism, a style known as Cubofuturism. She explored the dynamism of modern life through fragmented forms and bold colour. Exter was also involved in stage design and costume, bringing her avant-garde aesthetic to the theatre. Her work reflects an interest in geometric abstraction and the energy of the machine age. 'Donna' presents a female figure rendered in a Cubofuturist style. The body is deconstructed into geometric planes, with overlapping shapes suggesting movement and multiple perspectives. The colour palette is restrained, featuring earthy tones of brown and orange, contrasted with black, white, and touches of red and green. The composition is dynamic, with the figure seemingly caught in motion. The background is simplified, further emphasising the fragmented form of the woman. The painting captures the essence of early 20th-century avant-garde art, with its focus on abstraction and the representation of modern life.
