An early Post-Byzantine icon by El Greco, depicting the Dormition of the Virgin with traditional iconography and gold-leaf detailing.
The Dormition of the Virgin, painted by El Greco during his early years in Crete, reflects the artist's training within the Post-Byzantine tradition. This work follows the established iconographic conventions of the Orthodox Church, depicting the Virgin Mary lying on her deathbed, surrounded by the Apostles. Christ stands at the centre, receiving the soul of his mother, which is represented as a small, swaddled figure held in his arms.
The composition is organised with a clear hierarchical structure. The lower register focuses on the earthly grief of the Apostles, while the upper register introduces a celestial dimension, featuring angels and divine figures. The use of gold leaf, particularly in the background and the halo of Christ, aligns with the aesthetic requirements of devotional icons of the period. Despite the adherence to traditional forms, the work displays the early signs of the expressive, elongated figures and dramatic lighting that would define the artist's later career in Spain.
El Greco, born Domenikos Theotokopoulos, began his career as a master of the Cretan School. This panel serves as a bridge between his Eastern Mediterranean origins and his eventual transition into the Western European Renaissance style. The figures are arranged in a dense, crowded manner, typical of the Dormition iconography, yet the handling of the drapery and the subtle modelling of the faces suggest a departure from the more rigid, linear style of his contemporaries. The work remains a significant example of the transition from medieval icon painting to the more fluid, individualistic approach of the late sixteenth century. It is currently housed in the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin in Ermoupoli, Syros, Greece.
