Joseph Wright of Derby, born in 1734, was an English painter known for his use of chiaroscuro and his depictions of industrial subjects during the early Industrial Revolution. He captured the drama of scientific and technological advancements, as well as natural wonders. Wright's innovative approach to light and shadow made him a significant figure in British art. He died in 1797. 'Dovedale by Moonlight' exemplifies Wright's skill in capturing the sublime qualities of nature.
