Description
Dover Castle crowns a green Kent hillside with pale walls and a commanding square keep, its layered defences rising above woodland beneath an unusually broad sweep of blue sky.
Henry II rebuilt Dover Castle on an immense scale in the 1180s, making its Great Tower the centrepiece of the royal fortress. The site in Dover, Kent, combines that medieval stronghold with earlier remains, including a Roman lighthouse and a Saxon church.
Above a dark band of trees, pale battlements step across the hill. The broad square keep rises behind lower walls, towers and red-roofed buildings, with small chalk outcrops visible on the left slope. Green grass and scattered pink flowers suggest summer. Cream and lilac clouds occupy much of the sky, giving the fortress room to stand clearly above its wooded setting.
