A 1934 watercolour by Eric Ravilious depicting the quiet, rolling hills of the South Downs with a solitary agricultural roller in the foreground.
Eric Ravilious produced this watercolour in 1934, capturing the distinct topography of the South Downs. The composition focuses on the rolling chalk hills of Sussex, a subject that occupied the artist throughout his career. Ravilious employs his characteristic technique of stippling and fine hatching, which creates a sense of texture across the ploughed earth and the distant slopes. The foreground features an agricultural roller, an object that provides a sense of scale and human presence within the quiet, wintry environment.
The palette is restrained, relying on muted greens, browns, and soft greys to convey the chill of the season. The light appears diffused, typical of a winter day in the English countryside. By placing the roller at an angle, Ravilious guides the viewer's eye across the furrows of the field and toward the horizon. The trees, rendered with delicate precision, break the rhythm of the hills, adding a vertical element to the otherwise horizontal sweep of the landscape.
Ravilious studied at the Royal College of Art and became known for his work in various media, including wood engraving and lithography. His approach to watercolour painting often reflects his background in graphic design, with a clear emphasis on pattern and structure. This work demonstrates his ability to observe the mundane details of rural life and transform them into a composed, rhythmic image. The absence of human figures allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the tools of agriculture and the natural form of the land. This print captures the stillness of the Sussex Downs, offering a view of the region that is both observational and stylised.
