A study of Auguste Rodin's iconic sculpture, Le Baiser, capturing the raw emotion and physical intimacy of the lovers Paolo and Francesca.
Auguste Rodin created Le Baiser, or The Kiss, as part of his larger commission for the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, known as The Gates of Hell. The figures represent Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Rimini, characters from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. Rodin initially conceived these lovers as part of the massive portal project, but he later removed them because their expression of joy contrasted with the surrounding themes of suffering and damnation.
The sculpture captures a moment of intimacy between the two figures. Rodin focused on the physical connection, using the tactile quality of the plaster to suggest the softness of skin against the rougher, unrefined surface of the rock upon which they sit. His approach to modelling allows light to play across the musculature of the male figure and the curvature of the female form, creating a sense of movement and emotional weight. Unlike the rigid academic standards of his time, Rodin prioritised the expression of human emotion through the body, often leaving visible marks of his tools to maintain a sense of immediacy.
This specific version is a plaster study, which reveals the artist's process before the final casting in bronze or carving in marble. The surface texture retains the character of the original clay model, offering a direct view into Rodin's technique. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist directs the viewer to the physical tension and the emotional gravity of the embrace. The composition is balanced, with the figures intertwined in a way that suggests both vulnerability and strength. It remains a primary example of how Rodin shifted the focus of sculpture toward psychological depth and the raw reality of the human form.
