Description
A seminal 1948 collage by Eduardo Paolozzi, featuring a dense assembly of mid-century American commercial imagery and consumer icons.
Eduardo Paolozzi created Dr. Pepper in 1948, a work that occupies a specific position in the development of British Pop Art. Composed as a collage, the piece assembles disparate fragments of American commercial imagery, including advertisements for household appliances, automobiles, and soft drinks. By juxtaposing these mass-produced icons with figures from popular media, Paolozzi examines the post-war fascination with consumer culture. The composition is dense and layered, reflecting the visual saturation of the mid-twentieth century. A large yellow stove serves as a backdrop for a collection of cut-outs, including a woman reclining across the foreground and a motorcyclist positioned near the centre. The inclusion of the Dr. Pepper logo provides a direct reference to the branding that began to dominate the visual environment of the era. Paolozzi utilised these found materials to construct a commentary on the influx of American goods into the British market following the Second World War. This work is part of a series of collages Paolozzi produced while living in Paris. These pieces were famously presented during a lecture at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 1952. By isolating these images from their original advertising context, the artist forces a re-evaluation of their aesthetic and social function. The work avoids a singular narrative, instead offering a fragmented view of a culture increasingly defined by its commodities. The physical construction of the collage, with its visible edges and overlapping elements, maintains a raw quality that contrasts with the polished nature of the advertisements themselves.
