A seminal 1956 collage by Richard Hamilton that defines the Pop Art movement through a satirical assembly of mid-century consumer culture imagery.
Richard Hamilton created this collage for the exhibition This Is Tomorrow at the Whitechapel Gallery in London in 1956. It is widely recognised as one of the earliest examples of Pop Art. The composition consists of various cut-outs from American magazines, assembled to form a domestic interior that reflects the consumer culture of the post-war era.
The scene features a bodybuilder holding a large lollipop with the word POP printed on it, standing alongside a woman seated on a sofa. The room is filled with modern appliances and mass-media imagery, including a television set, a vacuum cleaner, and a comic book cover. A Ford logo sits on a lampshade, while a view of a cinema marquee is visible through the window. The ceiling is decorated with a photograph of the Earth from space, adding a surreal element to the otherwise mundane setting.
Hamilton used these disparate elements to comment on the rapid changes in lifestyle and the influence of advertising on the home. By combining high-culture references with low-culture imagery, he questioned the boundaries between art and everyday life. The work captures the optimism and the materialism of the 1950s, presenting a vision of the idealised modern home that is both satirical and observational. The collage technique allows for a dense layering of visual information, where each component serves as a signifier of the era's obsession with comfort, status, and technological progress. It remains a primary document for understanding the shift towards a consumer-driven society in the mid-twentieth century.
