A woodcut from Albrecht Dürer's 1525 treatise, illustrating a draftsman using a mechanical perspective device to draw a reclining figure.
This woodcut by Albrecht Dürer originates from his treatise on geometry and measurement, titled Underweysung der Messung, published in 1525. The image depicts a draftsman using a mechanical device to assist in the accurate rendering of a reclining figure. This apparatus, a glass frame positioned between the artist and the subject, allowed the practitioner to trace the contours of the model onto a grid, ensuring correct perspective and proportion.
Dürer, a central figure of the Northern Renaissance, possessed a deep interest in the mathematical foundations of art. His work often bridged the gap between empirical observation and theoretical rigour. In this print, the artist is shown standing at his easel, peering through a sight-hole attached to the frame. The model reclines on a bed behind the apparatus, partially obscured by the grid lines that define the artist's view. The composition is structured to demonstrate the practical application of linear perspective, a subject that occupied much of Dürer's later career.
The woodcut technique is executed with precision, using clear, controlled lines to define the forms and the mechanical elements of the drawing tool. The interior setting, complete with a canopy bed and simple furniture, provides a domestic context for this scientific endeavour. By documenting the use of such tools, Dürer provides insight into the workshop practices of the sixteenth century. This print remains a valuable record of how Renaissance artists sought to master the representation of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface through the use of geometry and optics.
