A classic ink wash painting by the Zen monk Sesson Shūkei, depicting a tiger in a natural setting, representing the elemental forces of the Muromachi period.
Sesson Shūkei, a Zen monk and painter, produced this work during the Muromachi period. The composition belongs to a tradition of pairing the dragon and the tiger, which represent the elemental forces of water and wind respectively. In this specific panel, the tiger occupies the foreground, rendered with precise brushwork that defines its fur and posture against a rocky outcrop. The surrounding environment includes bamboo stalks and a waterfall, elements that provide a sense of atmospheric depth through the use of varying ink washes.
Sesson was known for his eccentric style and his departure from the rigid conventions of the Kano school. His technique relies on the economy of the brush, where the contrast between light and dark ink creates a sense of movement and tension. The tiger appears alert, its gaze directed across the panels, suggesting the presence of the dragon, which would traditionally occupy the companion screen. The composition balances the solid form of the animal with the fluid, ethereal quality of the mist and water, a hallmark of the ink wash tradition.
This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink, preserving the texture of the paper and the deliberate strokes of the artist. The work reflects the philosophical interests of the period, where nature served as a vehicle for meditation and the expression of dualistic concepts. By focusing on the tiger, the viewer observes the artist's ability to imbue a creature with both physical weight and spiritual presence. The work remains a fine example of the ink painting tradition that flourished in Japan during the sixteenth century, demonstrating a mastery of tone and spatial arrangement that defines the aesthetic of the era.
