This is a detail from the fresco 'Dream of Innocent III and the Confirmation of the Rule' by Benozzo Gozzoli, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. Gozzoli, who lived from 1421 to 1497, was a student of Fra Angelico and is best known for his frescoes, particularly the series in the Magi Chapel of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, Florence. The fresco depicts Pope Innocent III seated and confirming the Rule of Saint Francis. The composition shows Saint Francis kneeling before the Pope, presenting the written rule of his order. The Pope, adorned in papal robes and a triregnum, gestures in acknowledgement. Surrounding them are other figures, including monks and clerics, all rendered with careful attention to detail and individual expression. The colours are muted, with a focus on earth tones and subtle gradations of light and shadow, typical of Early Renaissance painting. The figures are solid and three-dimensional, reflecting the influence of classical art and the Renaissance interest in humanism.
