A minimalist conceptual illustration by Michiel Hertroys, exploring the intersection of visual narrative and mathematical logic through a playful canine scene.
Drie delen door één is a work of conceptual illustration by the Dutch artist Michiel Hertroys. The composition employs a minimalist aesthetic, relying on clean, thin lines to convey a narrative that balances humour with mathematical absurdity. The visual field is largely empty, focusing the viewer on the central interaction between the canine subject and its environment.
In the foreground, a dog sits beside a series of three doghouses, one of which appears to be collapsing or shifting. A second dog, positioned further back and tethered to a small structure, is depicted with a thought bubble containing the mathematical expression 3 / 1. The work plays with the literal interpretation of the title, which translates from Dutch as Three parts divided by one. By juxtaposing the physical reality of the three structures with the abstract numerical notation, Hertroys invites the viewer to consider the relationship between language, logic, and visual representation.
The execution is precise and restrained. The artist avoids unnecessary detail, allowing the sparse arrangement of elements to dictate the rhythm of the piece. The use of a thought bubble serves as a direct link between the character's internal state and the external world, a common device in graphic storytelling that Hertroys adapts here for a more cerebral purpose. The work functions as a visual riddle, where the simplicity of the line work contrasts with the complexity of the underlying concept. It is an example of how graphic art can function as a medium for philosophical inquiry, stripping away the superfluous to examine the mechanics of thought itself. The composition remains balanced, with the negative space acting as a necessary component of the overall design, ensuring that the viewer's attention is directed precisely where the artist intends.
