Description
This mezzotint by Wallerant Vaillant, titled 'Drinkende dame', depicts a woman drinking from a dish, attended by a man and a boy. The print showcases Vaillant's mastery of the mezzotint technique and his skill in capturing domestic scenes.
Wallerant Vaillant (1623-1677) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker. He is considered one of the first artists to use the mezzotint technique, which allows for rich tonal gradations. Vaillant was born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam in 1643. He travelled extensively, working in Germany and France, before settling in Amsterdam. He is known for his portraits and genre scenes. 'Drinkende dame' depicts a woman seated at a table, drinking from a shallow dish. A man stands behind her, and a young boy offers her a covered bowl. A dog is visible at the lower right. The composition is lit from the left, creating strong contrasts of light and shadow. The mezzotint technique is well-suited to this subject, as it allows for the subtle rendering of textures and tones. The figures are dressed in clothing typical of the 17th century, and the scene has a domestic, intimate quality.

He trained under Erasmus Quellinus II in Antwerp and worked as a portraitist in Amsterdam, with extended stays in Paris from 1659 to 1664.
