A refined 1870 etching by Léopold Flameng after Pierre-Paul Prud'hon, depicting a mythological scene of repose.
This etching, titled Le Sommeil (The Sleep), is a reproduction by the Belgian printmaker Léopold Flameng, based on an original sketch by the French painter Pierre-Paul Prud'hon. Published in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in 1870, the work captures a scene of quiet repose. The composition depicts a reclining female figure, often identified as Psyche, resting under a canopy while surrounded by winged putti.
Prud'hon was known for his soft, atmospheric approach to Neoclassicism, often favouring chiaroscuro effects over the rigid lines of his contemporaries. Flameng translates this painterly quality into the medium of etching through delicate cross-hatching and varied tonal density. The dark, shadowy background provides a contrast to the illuminated figures, creating a sense of depth and intimacy. The figures are rendered with a focus on grace and fluidity, reflecting the romanticised interpretation of classical mythology common in nineteenth-century French art.
The print serves as a record of the original sketch held in the collection of the Duc d'Aumale. The technical execution demonstrates the high standard of reproductive printmaking during the period, where the goal was to convey the texture and mood of the original painting or drawing. The soft edges and the gentle interaction between the figures contribute to the dreamlike quality of the scene. This piece offers a glimpse into the way classical themes were interpreted and disseminated through the pages of influential art journals of the era.
